Inlay work is more like a painting on stone but with a difference. Here, instead of paints, natural stones and precious/semi precious gemstones are used. This art form was patronized by kings and is most evident in the Taj Mahal where intricate designs are inlayed in precious stones. The process of inlayed is very time consuming and all work is done by hand process. A graph is drawn on the graph paper, and then each petal or design is shaped from a wafer thin stone / gem stone on hand grinders. Then the marble slab is dug out with simple iron chisels only to the size, shape and thickness of the shaped stones. The shaped stone are fixed into the grooves with the help of fast adhesives (resin & hardner). Once all the stones are put in place, the inlayed slab is given glossy polish by polishers. One can find stone tabletops, jewelry boxes, animal figures etc. with inlay work on it. |
